Croatia Weather and Water Temperature by Month

European Adventure Charters
N+1 at anchor off the coast of Croatia

By Mandy Walker, owner of Wlms Yacht Charters · Updated October 2026

Croatia’s yacht charter season runs from about May through October, when the Adriatic Sea is warm enough to swim and the days are long and sunny. The water ranges from about 64°F (18°C) in May to 75–79°F (24–26°C) in July and August, and summer daytime highs reach the low to mid 80s°F (28–30°C).

On a crewed yacht charter in Croatia, you’ll swim off the back of the boat in some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean, between stops at harbor towns like Hvar, Vis and Korčula. Here’s what to expect month by month, so you can choose the right time for your group.

Croatia Weather and Water Temperature by Month

Averages for Split, on the central Dalmatian coast:

Croatia weather and water temperature by month: sea about 64°F (18°C) in May, 70–72°F in June, 75–79°F (24–26°C) in July and August, 72–73°F in September and 68°F (20°C) in October.

May and June

The season opens with fresh water around 64°F (18°C) in May, warming to about 70–72°F (21–22°C) by late June. Days are sunny and pleasantly warm, the harbors are quieter, and the countryside is green. Early-season swimmers may want a thin wetsuit or rash guard in May.

July and August

This is peak season, with the warmest water of the year at about 75–79°F (24–26°C) and daytime highs in the low to mid 80s°F. Expect around 10–11 hours of sunshine a day and very little rain. Popular harbors like Hvar and Dubrovnik are at their busiest, so your crew may plan quieter anchorages for the evenings.

September and October

The water holds its summer warmth into September, at about 72–73°F (22–23°C), while the crowds thin out. Many guests consider September the best month of the year. By October the water is around 68°F (20°C), the days are cooler, and rain becomes more common as the season ends.

Croatia’s Sailing Winds

Croatia’s weather on the water is shaped by three local winds. Your captain watches the forecast every day and plans the route around them.

  • Maestral: a steady northwest breeze that builds most summer afternoons and fades by evening. It’s the classic Adriatic sailing wind and keeps hot days comfortable.
  • Bura (Bora): a cold, gusty wind from the northeast, strongest in winter. In summer it’s rarer and usually short-lived, but it brings very clear skies and can keep yachts in a sheltered harbor for a day.
  • Jugo: a warm, humid wind from the southeast that builds over several days, bringing waves, clouds and sometimes rain. It’s more common in spring and fall.

Best Time to Charter a Yacht in Croatia

The best time depends on what matters most to your group:

  • For the warmest water and liveliest harbors: July and August, with water around 75–79°F.
  • For warm water with fewer crowds: June and September. Many guests find September the sweet spot.
  • For quiet anchorages and mild weather: May and early October, though the water is cooler for swimming.

Croatia has no hurricane season, so the whole charter season is open for booking. July and August book up first, so plan early for those months.

Is the Weather Different in Split and Dubrovnik?

Only slightly. Dubrovnik, farther south, is usually a degree or two warmer than Split, in both the air and the water. The central islands around Split, like Hvar and Vis, are among the sunniest places in Croatia. Either starting point gives you the same warm, dry summer.

What to Pack for a Croatia Yacht Charter

  • Light layers: a sweater or light jacket for breezy evenings on deck, especially in May, June and October.
  • Water shoes: many Croatian beaches are pebble rather than sand.
  • A rash guard or thin wetsuit: handy for longer swims in May and October, when the water is cooler.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses: summer sun on the water is strong.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the water warmest in Croatia?

August, when the Adriatic averages about 75–79°F (24–26°C). July is close behind, and the water stays warm well into September.

Is the water warm enough to swim in May?

It’s refreshing. The water is about 64°F (18°C) in May, so many guests take short swims or wear a thin wetsuit. By mid-June it’s comfortable for most swimmers.

Does it rain much in Croatia in summer?

Very little. July and August are the driest months, with only a few short showers. Rain becomes more common from October onward.

What is the best month for a yacht charter in Croatia?

September is a favorite: the water is still warm, the weather is settled, and the harbors are quieter than in July and August. June is a close second.

Is Croatia windy for sailing?

In summer, the Maestral brings a steady afternoon breeze that’s ideal for sailing and keeps the heat comfortable. Stronger winds like the Bura are less common in summer, and your captain plans around them.
