Captain Shawn Deweese:
Shawn holds a Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, & a Master's Degree in Social Organizational Psychology from Columbia University. He served nine years at sea in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard cutters ALEX HALEY (Kodiak, AK), KUKUI (Honolulu, HI), & CAMPBELL (Kittery, ME). He also commanded Cutters ADAK (Manama, Bahrain) & KISKA (Hilo, HI). He is a licensed Merchant Mariner with a 1600-ton Oceans Master License. Now that we've gotten all of the really serious things out of the way, we figured you'd like to know a little more about this one. He's pretty cool. Shawn is a talented craftsman. He makes cutting boards, paddles, picture frames, & much more, all from really beautiful wood. He's a die hard fan of pretzels. Any kind of pretzels. Most of us consider Shawn to be amphibious. He spends much of his time underwater, sometimes to the concern of others.

First Mate/Deck Hand: Victoria Balcheva
Victoria was introduced to sailing in sunny Greece a few years ago. She loved the idea of being in the water and running a boat. She earned her Skipper diploma for yachts up to 72ft while in Greece and spent a year running day trips and multi-day cruises around Thassos island. Victoria immersed herself in the sail culture and participated in local regattas, and was a skipper for a two week trip around Greece, transiting the Corinth Canal twice and gaining more than 3500NM as a skipper. Victoria decided to expand her knowledge and went back to the USA where she gained STCW, Powerboat 2, RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certification. She’s currently completing USCG 100 Ton Captain license certification while being Shawn’s right hand running August Maverick. She and Shawn delivered August Maverick north last year from the USVI to Maine adding 2700NM under her belt. In addition to her many responsibilities as the only permanent crew member, Victoria manages August Maverick’s social media, website and tries to keep Shawn out of trouble...some jobs are harder than others!

January 2020
August Maverick is a beautiful vessel — classic design, tastefully updated and lovingly maintained — very well suited to larger groups regardless of weather. The lower salon and berths were spacious and comfortable, but the pilot house is exceptional. Bright and airy, it had enough room to shelter us from the occasional rain, and opened up easily to the aft deck when the sun was shining. It was our favorite space to hang out. Shawn and the entire crew were outstanding hosts. They were competent, attentive and accommodating, as you would expect from a professional charter company. But what really made our trip so enjoyable was that the crew was also relaxed and fun. And patient — Captain Shawn was willing to share his local knowledge, love of sailing and pride in the August Maverick to answer our endless “newbie” questions. We had a great trip and would recommend the August Maverick to anyone. David and Family, January 2020
February 2020
Shawn, Victoria and Nate, Thank you for making this an exceptional experience for Mike and I. This trip has helped bring us back to our center. Nate: Can’t tell you enough how excellent we believe your cooking skills are. I preferred your food to the dinners on shore. I’m sure Mike would agree. Thank you for all your effort. Victoria: you are an outstandingly wonderful host. You move so quietly about taking care of all our needs. You make an excellent drink. Thanks for all the extra time with moving us about the cabins. Clean sheets, towels, and a cool and cozy room to return to at the end of the day. Thank you. You have a sweet and kind soul. Shawn: thank you most of of all. This adventure meant the world to us. All the points of interest, stops, all had a different atmosphere and feel and memory. I hope this venturing means as much to all who have the opportunity in the future. Mike and Ann February 2020
February 2020
We sailed on the August Maverick in late February 2020 Captain Shawn Deweese and his crew, Victoria and chef, Nate were incredible. The voyage exceeded all of our expectations. Shawn chose beautiful bays and coves to moor in with a good mix of serenity and activity. We had a nice mix of water sports such as SUPs, kayaks and snorkeling along with exploring local beaches and watering holes. We enjoyed cocktail hour with awesome beverages and sunsets. We chose half of our dinners on board, and the others at great beach restaurants. The accommodations on board were fabulous. Each berth has its own bathroom and the common areas are very comfortable. Truly was a trip of a lifetime, and I wanted to stay forever. In fact, I inquired if they needed a doctor on board. A lovely respite from a hectic job and cold Minnesota winters. I would enthusiastically recommend August Maverick to anyone wanting a Virgin Island sailing experience. I have traveled extensively, and this trip is tops in my book. Janet, February 2020

Get out of the classroom & learn from the best. Spend a week aboard S/V August Maverick & study for your captain’s license under a former Coast Guard commanding officer. This course is 55 hours long & is spread over a 7-day trip with Becket Benders aboard the 92-foot sailing yacht August Maverick. Each day we’ll study a focused topic, & over the course of the day you’ll get a chance to actually practice the skills you learn. Whether it is knots, anchors, or small boats, you’ll actually be doing it, instead of learning from a PowerPoint presentation. AND you’ll be doing it on a sweet yacht in an awesome place.
Topics include chart plotting, navigation, deck seamanship, safety, & nautical rules of the road.

Regarding the course – students earn a certificate which serves in lieu of testing at the Coast Guard regional exam center. So for any of the folks in St. Thomas, they probably have OUPV or at a max a 100 ton license. The 7 day course will get you the OUPV license, and the 14 day course would get you the 100 or 50 ton license. After the course, students still need to submit their application, medical exam, and TWIC to the Coast Guard, but they don’t have to test. </BIG>

Thank your for making this an exceptional experience for Mike and I! 2019 proved to be a mix of wonderful experiences, and more difficult one. This trip has helped bring us back to our center. Note: Can't tell you enough how excellent we believe your cooking skills are. I preferred your food to the dinner on shore and I'm sure Mike would agree, so thank you for all your efforts. You are an outstanding, wonderful host. You move so quietly about taking care of all of our needs. You made an exceptional drink! Thank you for all the extra time with moving us about the cabins. Clean sheets, towels, and a cool and cozy room to return to at the end of the day. thank you, you are a sweet and kind soul. Thank you most of all, this adventure has meant the world to us. All the points of interest, stops, all had a different atmosphere and feel and memory. I hope this venture means as much to all who have the opportunity in the future. Bless you and your business venture. Mike and Ann

</BIG>
