Diving Costs information
Up to 3 dives for 4 divers included. Inquire for additional dives.
Shawn holds a Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, & a Master's Degree in Social Organizational Psychology from Columbia University. He served nine years at sea in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard cutters ALEX HALEY (Kodiak, AK), KUKUI (Honolulu, HI), & CAMPBELL (Kittery, ME). He also commanded Cutters ADAK (Manama, Bahrain) & KISKA (Hilo, HI). He is a licensed Merchant Mariner with a 1600-ton Oceans Master License. Now that we've gotten all of the really serious things out of the way, we figured you'd like to know a little more about this one. He's pretty cool. Shawn is a talented craftsman. He makes cutting boards, paddles, picture frames, & much more, all from really beautiful wood. He's a die hard fan of pretzels. Any kind of pretzels. Most of us consider Shawn to be amphibious. He spends much of his time underwater, sometimes to the concern of others.
First Mate/Deck Hand: Victoria Balcheva
Victoria was introduced to sailing in sunny Greece a few years ago. She loved the idea of being in the water and running a boat. She earned her Skipper diploma for yachts up to 72ft while in Greece and spent a year running day trips and multi-day cruises around Thassos island. Victoria immersed herself in the sail culture and participated in local regattas, and was a skipper for a two week trip around Greece, transiting the Corinth Canal twice and gaining more than 3500NM as a skipper. Victoria decided to expand her knowledge and went back to the USA where she gained STCW, Powerboat 2, RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certification. She’s currently completing USCG 100 Ton Captain license certification while being Shawn’s right hand running August Maverick. She and Shawn delivered August Maverick north last year from the USVI to Maine adding 2700NM under her belt. In addition to her many responsibilities as the only permanent crew member, Victoria manages August Maverick’s social media, website and tries to keep Shawn out of trouble...some jobs are harder than others!

Get out of the classroom & learn from the best. Spend a week aboard S/V August Maverick & study for your captain’s license under a former Coast Guard commanding officer. This course is 55 hours long & is spread over a 7-day trip with Becket Benders aboard the 92-foot sailing yacht August Maverick. Each day we’ll study a focused topic, & over the course of the day you’ll get a chance to actually practice the skills you learn. Whether it is knots, anchors, or small boats, you’ll actually be doing it, instead of learning from a PowerPoint presentation. AND you’ll be doing it on a sweet yacht in an awesome place.
Topics include chart plotting, navigation, deck seamanship, safety, & nautical rules of the road.
Regarding the course – students earn a certificate which serves in lieu of testing at the Coast Guard regional exam center. So for any of the folks in St. Thomas, they probably have OUPV or at a max a 100 ton license. The 7 day course will get you the OUPV license, and the 14 day course would get you the 100 or 50 ton license. After the course, students still need to submit their application, medical exam, and TWIC to the Coast Guard, but they don’t have to test. </BIG>
