Greece is a fabulous charter destination! As more people become interested in sailing these beautiful waters, I think it’s important to understand just how diverse a sailing country it is and how many locations are available for charter.
We’ve all seen the gorgeous Santorini and Mykonos photos with beautiful white-washed houses accented in brilliant blue perched on hills overlooking the sea; or, the crystal-clear waters of the Ionian Sea surrounding Zakynthos. But remember, when deciding on your charter, there are 6000 islands in Greece dotted throughout the Aegean and Ionian Seas- only 227 of which are inhabited. Even fewer, such as Santorini and Mykonos, that most have heard of for holidays. So, when it comes to your charter… where do you go?
WLMS Charters can help! By considering your groups preferences for the location, type of charter (remote vs. towns), size of yacht, and budget- we’ll help find the charter yacht and location within Greece that best suits you.
Athens is by far the largest charter port region with a multitude of marinas and easy access from an international airport. However, depending on your individual sailing preferences, you may look to take advantage of a port closer to your desired destination. Islands such as Mykonos, Naxos, and Paros in the Cyclades are a quick flight or high speed ferry away from Athens; but, starting in the area allows for shorter sailing distances between your desired destinations.
There are also the beautiful Saronic Islands and the Peloponnese Peninsula, and the Sporades Islands- each island chain offering very different experiences. Lefkas or Corfu are 2 ports to start charters in the calmer waters of the Ionian Sea- it’s another world to explore!
So, start by looking over these different locations and then check out our next blog for the yachts we recently viewed on our trip to Greece.
