Captain
Justin Smith
Nation: USA
Born: 1989
License: 100T US Masters
Languages: English
Chef/First Mate
Maddie
Nation: USA
License: STCW
Justin was born in Connecticut, a state saturated in oceanic history; but, if you ask him he will tell you he is from the ocean, “home is where the anchor drops.” Unlike most young American men, Justin was raised mainly by his seafaring grandparents and received an education whilst they sailed up and down the Eastern Coast of the United States.

The world has been Justin’s oyster and he was privileged enough to have spent his youth in various countries and honed his captain’s education in a myriad of maritime schools. A skilled sailor, he received his master’s license at the juvenile age of only sixteen; he was unable to escape the call of the ocean. As a young man, Justin exhibited a passion not only to sail the seas, but also to rebuild classic boats. His first large project was the restoration of a classic fiberglass boat, a vessel which enabled him to start his adult maritime career. He sailed south towards not only the Caribbean, but onwards to a life of adventure and self-fulfillment.

During his time in the Caribbean, Justin captained several yachts and began his profession in yacht charters. At this point in time, Justin has seven years experience in the charter business. The love for his craft shows not only in his expertise of the seas, but also in riveting conversations with guests about boats, the ocean, and all things nautical!

At the helm, Captain Justin likes to take his guests to off the beaten path locations, catch lobsters and makes fresh conch salads. Come sail with Justin and explore the hidden treasures of the islands, he’ll show you a world traversed by only a few.

Chef Maddie was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri but was always drawn towards the ocean. After attending nursing school in Arizona, she packed up and followed her calling to St. Croix, USVI. With a passion for learning new things, she spent most of her time in or on the water discovering the beauty of sailing, cooking, and serving others. Maddie is passionate about creating meals that her guests will love. She has well-rounded experience in serving groups as small as two people to banquets of over 100, including the famous rock singer, Alice Cooper and his family.

When Maddie is not in the galley, she enjoys diving, hiking, snorkeling and showing her guests the beauty of the USVI.

Unforgettable experience...
The captain and first mate are super professional, welcoming, laid back and open minded people, they know best spots for snorkeling, fishing or best Mohitos. It was a great pleasure spending a week on the beautiful and very comfy boat having delicious meals and great conversations with Justin and Sarah. Thanks a lot for this unforgettable experience and see you on my next holidays with Kai!
Trip of a lifetime!!
I was fortunate enough to sail with the crew of Kia from Marathon Florida to Georgetown Bahamas. To call it the trip of a lifetime would be an understatement. It was truly a life changing adventure. I am a sailor myself and am always weary about sailing on another captain's boat, but Justin is an exception to the rule. He has more experience on the water then most sailors twice his age and he is always willing to pass his knowledge to others. Hanging out with Justin and Sarah on all the islands along the way, hiking, fishing, swimming, and sometimes just chilling, will be memories that I will cherish forever. Thank you both from the bottom of my heart. Fair winds my friends
28th wedding anniversary trip
We were blessed to spend our 28 year wedding anniversary on a Kai for weekend sail. Unlike many charter companies, Justin and Sarah customized a trip just for us. We left Niantic CT and sailed to Sag Habor,NY on day one and on day two we sailed to Montauk. We were moored in beautiful locations and Justin was always available to drop us off and pick us up from the dock. Although the boat is older, it feels far more solid than any other we have been on. Everything was extremely clean and comfortable. An unexpected delight was the special foods prepared by Sarah. She made it a point to get to know us ahead of time and to stock the galley with everything we liked from meals to snacks to cocktails. She is an incredible chef preparing the freshest fish ceviche, shrimp cakes and from the farm greens with fresh tuna and grilled chicken. Breakfast was made to order. Justin who was raised on boats is a master sailor. We never felt unsafe with him. He is brilliant when it comes to all things boats and sailing. Aside from that, both Sarah and Justin are warm and welcoming and we couldn't have thought of a better way to celebrate our anniversary. We look forward to joining them in St John and around the BVI- also a place they know intimately.
